Corona Virus Test (COVID-19 RT-PCR)

EUA Approved

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified. This one is not the same as the coronaviruses that commonly circulate among humans that cause mild illness. COVID-19 seems to spread easily and sustainably in the community. Coronaviruses are spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

Background Information

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2. This virus comes from a family of viruses that have previously caused epidemics. Previous versions were known at MERS-CoV and SARS CoV, however, these illnesses only infected people in the thousands where COVID-19 has now infected over a million people worldwide. This disease has been reported in almost every country in the world. On March 11, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic.

How to Protect Yourself and Loved Ones

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

Who Can Order The Test?

Testing can be ordered only by physicians or other authorized health care providers (to find a provider near you check here). Self-ordered tests for COVID-19 are not available at this time due to limited diagnostic testing supplies.

Who Is At Risk?

Individuals in almost every age range have developed serious symptoms caused by the COVID-19 virus. However, some patients are more at risk than others. Patients with these situations should take extra caution

  • Patients over 60 years of age
  • Patients with lung disease
  • Patients with diabetes
  • Patients with heart disease
  • Patients that are immune compromised

Incubation Period

Current estimates suggest a median incubation period from five to six days; however, some patients have taken up to 14 days to exhibit symptoms. One study reported that 97.5% of people with COVID-19 that exhibit symptoms do so within 11.5 days of exposure.

Viral Shedding

Over the course of the infection the virus has been identified 1-2 days before the onset of symptoms and can persist for up to eight days in moderate cases and for longer periods in more severe cases.

Turn Around Time

As with all RealTime Laboratory Tests we will attempt to deliver test results within 48 to 72 hours of receipt of patient samples to our laboratory (however turnaround time will depend on volume).
